AIM: To evaluate the maxillary incisors and canine's immediate movement tendency using three different power arms (PA) height levels during total arch maxillary distalization supported on infrazygomatic crest (IZC) miniscrews according to finite element analysis (FEA). METHODS: Three finite element models of the maxilla were developed based on CBCT imaging of a teenage male patient presenting a Class II Division 1 malocclusion in the early permanent dentition. Maxillary complex, periodontium, orthodontic accessories, IZC miniscrews and an orthodontic wire were digitally created. The PAs were placed between canines and lateral incisors and projected at 4, 7, and 10 mm height distances. After that, distalization forces were simulated between PA and IZC miniscrews. RESULTS: The anterior teeth deformation produced in the FEA models was assessed according to a Von Mises equivalent. The stress was measured, revealing tendencies of initial maxillary teeth movement. No differences were found between the right and left sides. However, there was a significant difference among models in the under-stress areas, especially the apical and cervical root areas of the maxillary anterior teeth. More significant extrusion and lingual tipping of incisors were observed with the 4 mm power arm compared to the 7 mm and 10 mm ones. The 10 mm power arm did not show any tendency for extrusion of maxillary central incisors but a tendency for buccal tipping and intrusion of lateral incisors. CONCLUSION: The maxillary incisors and canines have different immediate movement tendencies according to the height of the anterior point of the en-masse distalization force application. Based on the PA height increase, a change from lingual to buccal tipping and less extrusion tendency was observed for the incisors, while the lingual tipping and extrusion trend for canines increased.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) can improve disability recovery after neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease (NMOSD) attacks, but its effectiveness and safety in Latin-American patients with access barriers and diverse ethnicity is underexplored. We carried out a retrospective cohort study with NMOSD patients that underwent TPE. 84 NMOSD attacks in 68 patients were evaluated. Despite a median 25-day delay from symptom onset to TPE, 65,5% of patients showed significant improvement. Adverse events occurred in 39% of patients, usually transitory and with no fatalities.

Enzymes of the sulfur assimilation pathway of plants have been identified as potential targets for herbicide development, given their crucial role in synthesizing amino acids, coenzymes, and various sulfated compounds. In this pathway, O-acetylserine (thiol) lyase (OAS-TL; EC 2.5.1.47) catalyzes the synthesis of L-cysteine through the incorporation of sulfate into O-acetylserine (OAS). This study used an in silico approach to select seven inhibitors for OAS-TL. The in silico experiments revealed that S-benzyl-L-cysteine (SBC) had a better docking score (-7.0 kcal mol-1) than the substrate OAS (-6.6 kcal mol-1), indicating its suitable interaction with the active site of the enzyme. In vitro experiments showed that SBC is a non-competitive inhibitor of OAS-TL from Arabidopsis thaliana expressed heterologously in Escherichia coli, with a Kic of 4.29 mM and a Kiu of 5.12 mM. When added to the nutrient solution, SBC inhibited the growth of maize and morning glory weed plants due to the reduction of L-cysteine synthesis. Remarkably, morning glory was more sensitive than maize. As proof of its mechanism of action, L-cysteine supplementation to the nutrient solution mitigated the inhibitory effect of SBC on the growth of morning glory. Taken together, our data suggest that reduced L-cysteine synthesis is the primary cause of growth inhibition in maize and morning glory plants exposed to SBC. Furthermore, our findings indicate that inhibiting OAS-TL could potentially be a novel approach for herbicidal action.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to understand how basic competencies in moral reasoning influence the application of private, institutional, and legal rules. HYPOTHESES: We predicted that moral appraisals, implicating both outcome-based and mental state reasoning, would shape participants' interpretation of rules and statutes-and asked whether these effects arise differentially under intuitive and reflective reasoning conditions. METHOD: In six vignette-based experiments (total N = 2,473; 293 university law students [67% women; age bracket mode: 18-22 years] and 2,180 online workers [60% women; mean age = 31.9 years]), participants considered a wide range of written rules and laws and determined whether a protagonist had violated the rule in question. We manipulated morally relevant aspects of each incident-including the valence of the rule's purpose (Study 1) and of the outcomes that ensued (Studies 2 and 3), as well as the protagonist's accompanying mental state (Studies 5 and 6). In two studies, we simultaneously varied whether participants decided under time pressure or following a forced delay (Studies 4 and 6). RESULTS: Moral appraisals of the rule's purpose, the agent's extraneous blameworthiness, and the agent's epistemic state impacted legal determinations and helped to explain participants' departure from rules' literal interpretation. Counter-literal verdicts were stronger under time pressure and were weakened by the opportunity to reflect. CONCLUSIONS: Under intuitive reasoning conditions, legal determinations draw on core competencies in moral cognition, such as outcome-based and mental state reasoning. Recent experimental work revealed that rule violation judgments are sensitive to morality. For instance: when someone blamelessly violates a rule's text, about half of the participants say that the rule was violated, with the remainder saying that it wasn't. Why is that so? Current evidence is compatible with three distinct explanations. According to the pragmatic view, rule violation judgments pragmatically imply judgments of blame. Hence, the results don't tell us anything about the concept of rule itself. Instead, they are simply caused by conversational pragmatics. On the other hand, the mixed character view states that the concept of rule simultaneously combines text and purpose into a single criterion. Finally, the dual character view states that the concept of rule is similar to the concepts of scientist and father. These concepts have two distinct sets of criteria, each sufficient to determine one sense in which the concept applies. One of the criteria is descriptive, while the other is normative. In this paper, we report the results of four studies designed to adjudicate between these alternatives. Studies 1A and 1B find results that are incompatible with the pragmatic view, while Study 2 shows that the concept of rule behaves in a way that is notably different than some mixed character concepts on a linguistic test. Finally, Studies 3-5 support the idea that the concept of rule has a dual character. We consider the jurisprudential implications of each alternative.

A cross-cultural survey experiment revealed a dominant tendency to rely on a rule's letter over its spirit when deciding which behaviors violate the rule. This tendency varied markedly across (k = 15) countries, owing to variation in the impact of moral appraisals on judgments of rule violation. Compared with laypeople, legal experts were more inclined to disregard their moral evaluations of the acts altogether and consequently exhibited stronger textualist tendencies. Finally, we evaluated a plausible mechanism for the emergence of textualism: in a two-player coordination game, incentives to coordinate in the absence of communication reinforced participants' adherence to rules' literal meaning. Together, these studies (total n = 5,794) help clarify the origins and allure of textualism, especially in the law. Within heterogeneous communities in which members diverge in their moral appraisals involving a rule's purpose, the rule's literal meaning provides a clear focal point-an identifiable point of agreement enabling coordinated interpretation among citizens, lawmakers, and judges.

Gestational hypothyroidism can impair development, cognition, and mood. Here, we tested whether multisensory stimulation (MS) improves the phenotype of rats born to surgically thyroidectomized (Tx) dams suboptimally treated with LT4. 8-week-old female Tx Wistar rats were kept on daily LT4 (0.7 µg/100 g body weight) dosed by gavage (serum TSH and T4 levels indicated moderate hypothyroidism) and 3 weeks later placed for breeding. MS of the litter started at age 60 days and lasted for 8 weeks. It consisted of twice per week of physical, cognitive, sensorial, and food stimuli. The offspring were assessed before and after MS for standardized tests of locomotor activity, cognition, and mood. Gestational hypothyroidism resulted in reduced litter size and increased offspring mortality. The pups exhibited delayed physical development, impairment of short- and long-term memory, and anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors. Nonetheless, ambulatory activity, social memory, and social preference were not affected by gestational hypothyroidism. MS restored short-term memory and anxiety while improving depressive like-behaviors. MS did not improve long-term memory. MS also did not modify the performance of control litter born to intact dams. We conclude that cognition and mood impairments caused by moderate gestational hypothyroidism were reversed or minimized in rats through MS. Further studies should define the molecular mechanisms involved.

After being adequately captured and concentrated, solar radiation can be conducted by optical fiber bundles/cables and directly used for illumination (lighting) or heating of confined spaces, or indirectly used by converting it in other forms of energy (e.g., for producing electricity). This article reports preliminary tests conducted on a 7-m-long optical fiber bundle/cable with an effective aperture circular area of 14 mm in diameter, specially designed and manufactured by a leading company to transmit up to 1000 Wth of unfiltered concentrated sunlight. The cable was tested in the typical receiver position at the top of a solar concentration central tower. The main purpose was the experimental determination of the transmission efficiency of the cable in function of the incidence angle using selected groups of heliostats belonging to the heliostat field. The testing methodology proved to be capable of evaluating the performance of the cable. The cable withstood the tests without revealing any type of damage. The results obtained showed that the transmissivity of the cable is higher than 50% when the incidence angle of the solar radiation is lower than 14.7°, increasing sharply to circa 95% when the incidence angle is lower than 4.5°.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of exercise limitation in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is not fully understood. The role of hemodynamic alterations is well recognized, but mechanical, ventilatory and gasometric factors may also contribute to reduction of exercise capacity in these individuals. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there is an association between ventilatory pattern and stress Doppler echocardiography (SDE) variables in IPAH patients. DESIGN AND SETTING: Single-center prospective study conducted in a Brazilian university hospital. METHODS: We included 14 stable IPAH patients and 14 age and sex-matched controls. Volumetric capnography (VCap), spirometry, six-minute walk test and SDE were performed on both the patients and the control subjects. Arterial blood gases were collected only from the patients. The IPAH patients and control subjects were compared with regard to the abovementioned variables. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 38.4 years, and 78.6% were women. The patients showed hypocapnia, and in spirometry 42.9% presented forced vital capacity (FVC) below the lower limit of normality. In VCap, IPAH patients had higher respiratory rates (RR) and lower elimination of CO2 in each breath. There was a significant correlation between reduced FVC and the magnitude of increases in tricuspid regurgitation velocity (TRV). In IPAH patients, VCap showed similar tidal volumes and a higher RR, which at least partially explained the hypocapnia. CONCLUSIONS: The patients with IPAH showed hypocapnia, probably related to their higher respiratory rate with preserved tidal volumes; FVC was reduced and this reduction was positively correlated with cardiac output.

Despite pervasive variation in the content of laws, legal theorists and anthropologists have argued that laws share certain abstract features and even speculated that law may be a human universal. In the present report, we evaluate this thesis through an experiment administered in 11 different countries. Are there cross-cultural principles of law? In a between-subjects design, participants (N = 3,054) were asked whether there could be laws that violate certain procedural principles (e.g., laws applied retrospectively or unintelligible laws), and also whether there are any such laws. Confirming our preregistered prediction, people reported that such laws cannot exist, but also (paradoxically) that there are such laws. These results document cross-culturally and -linguistically robust beliefs about the concept of law which defy people's grasp of how legal systems function in practice.

INTRODUTION: COVID-19 infection may predispose to venous and arterial thromboembolism due to excessive inflammation, hypoxia, immobilization and disseminated intravascular coagulation; however, there are few reports of lower limb ischemia as the main manifestation of the disease. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Male patient, 69 years old, asthmatic, ex-smoker and bearer of systemic arterial hypertension, has been admitted to the emergency department with sudden onset of pain in the right lower limb (RLL), associated with cyanosis and reduced temperature of the limb. He has been tested for COVID-19 in the OR with positive result for IGG and IGM. Computed tomography angiography (AngioCT) was performed, showing signs of arterial embolization to both limbs, right internal iliac artery, and superior mesenteric artery. Faced with the threat of limb loss and the absence of signs and symptoms of visceral ischemia, the patient underwent full anticoagulation and RLL thromboembolectomy and tricompartmental fasciotomy. He was discharged after 7 days of hospitalization and demonstrated no other signs and symptoms of COVID-19, following outpatient follow-up. DISCUSSION: COVID-19 is associated with high risk of thrombotic complications being related to the clinical severity of the patient, with few studies that show symptoms of sudden pain in the lower limb without other complaints. CONCLUSION: Individuals infected with COVID-19 are at risk for arterial thromboembolic events, and knowledge of such cases is essential in order to create specific protocols for prophylaxis of thrombotic events in these patients, in addition to increasing the suspicion of infection in individuals with acute arterial occlusion, mostly during pandemic times.

Hydatid cyst in the cervical region is an extremely rare condition that can create challenges for anesthesiologists. Timely recognition of difficult airway and preparing the management plan is crucial to avoid life-threatening complications such as hypoxic brain damage. We describe a case of difficult airway management in a patient with massive cervical hydatid cyst. We used a low-dose ketamine-propofol sedation and lidocaine spray for local oropharyngeal anesthesia. Muscular relaxants were not used, and spontaneous breathing was maintained during intubation. Recognition, assessment, and perioperative planning are essential for difficult airway management in patients with cervical hydatid cyst.

Abstract Hydatid cyst in the cervical region is an extremely rare condition that can create challenges for anesthesiologists. Timely recognition of difficult airway and preparing the management plan is crucial to avoid life-threatening complications such as hypoxic brain damage. We describe a case of difficult airway management in a patient with massive cervical hydatid cyst. We used a low-dose ketamine-propofol sedation and lidocaine spray for local oropharyngeal anesthesia. Muscular relaxants were not used, and spontaneous breathing was maintained during intubation. Resumo O cisto hidático na região cervical é uma condição extremamente rara que pode criar desafios para os anestesiologistas. O reconhecimento oportuno das vias aéreas difíceis e a preparação do plano de manejo são cruciais para evitar complicações com risco de vida, como danos cerebrais hipóxicos. Descrevemos um caso de difícil controle das vias aéreas em um paciente com cisto hidático cervical maciço. Utilizamos sedação com cetamina-propofol em baixa dose e spray de lidocaína para anestesia local orofaríngea. Relaxantes musculares não foram utilizados e a respiração espontânea foi mantida durante a intubação. O reconhecimento, a avaliação e o planejamento perioperatório são essenciais para o manejo difícil das vias aéreas em pacientes com cisto hidático cervical.

Intensification of pig production in developing countries has resulted in increased number of animals per unit area leading to welfare and growth performance issues. This study was then performed to evaluate the effects of space allowance and dietary energy and amino acid content on growth performance and physiological parameters of piglets reared under tropical conditions. A total of 1280 piglets (castrated males and females) with initial body weight of 5.9 ± 0.4 kg were used. Animals were distributed in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement composed by two space allowances (0.30 and 0.22 m2/animal) and two diets during 43 to 63 days of age (control and experimental diet with increased ME and AA content). The experimental period lasted 42 days subdivided into four phases according to the growth stage of the animals: pre-initial I (21 to 27 days of age), pre-initial II (28 to 34 days), initial I (35 to 42 days), and initial II (43 to 63 days). During pre-initial I and II, and initial I phases, pigs housed at a space allowance of 0.30 and 22 m2/animal had similar (P > 0.05) feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion. During initial phase II, space allowance did not affect (P > 0.05) feed intake nor weight gain of the animals. Whereas, pigs fed the experimental diet had greater weight gain when compared to the control group (530 vs. 515 g/day, P = 0.03). According to our results, reducing space allowance from 0.30 to 22 m2/animal during the nursery phase (21 to 63 days of age) had negligible effects on piglet feed intake and weight gain, whereas feeding piglets with diets containing higher energy and amino levels resulted in greater weight gain.

Cell walls of grasses have ferulic acid (FA) ester-linked to the arabinosyl substitutions of arabinoxylan (AX). Feruloyl esterases (FAE) are carboxylic acid esterases that release FA from cell walls and synthetic substrates. Despite the importance of FA for cell wall recalcitrance and in response to biotic and abiotic stresses, the physiological function of plant FAEs remains unclear. Here, we developed a simple method for the determination of FAE activity (ZmFAE) in maize using the total protein extract and investigated its role in regulating the feruloylation of cell wall. The method includes a single protein extraction and enzymatic reaction with protein concentration as low as 65 µg at 35 °C for 30 min, using methyl ferulate as the substrate. The methodology allowed the determination of the apparent Km (392.82 µM) and Vmax (79.15 pkat mg-1 protein). We also found that ZmFAE activity was correlated (r = 0.829) with the levels of FA in seedling roots, plant roots and leaves of maize. Furthermore, the exposure to osmotic stress resulted in a 50% increase in ZmFAE activity in seedling roots. These data suggest that FAE-catalyzed reaction is important for cell wall feruloylation during plant development and in response to abiotic stress. We conclude proposing a model for the feruloylation and deferuloylation of AX, which explains the role of FAE in regulating the levels of ester-linked FA. Our model might orient further studies investigating the role of plant FAEs and assist strategies for genetic engineering of grasses to obtain plants with reduced biomass recalcitrance.

Trigeminal schwannomas are benign slow-growing tumors originating from the peripheral nerve sheath. They account for 0.1%-0.4% of all intracranial tumors and 1%-8% of all intracranial schwannomas.1-3 While most of these tumors develop in the trigeminal ganglion within the middle fossa, trigeminal schwannomas can develop anywhere along the course of the trigeminal nerve. As a result, they can be intradural, interdural, and extradural.4,5 Trigeminal schwannomas from the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) are extremely rare and very difficult to remove because of limited access to this region and the rich neurovascular contents. Numerous traditional microsurgical approaches to the PPF have been described; however, they are more invasive with increased morbidity.6,7 Therefore, endoscopic endonasal surgery is a feasible solution. This technique allows good visualization of the region with decreased morbidity and a shorter recovery period. A previously healthy, 40-year-old woman presented with right facial pain for 3 weeks. On neurologic examination, the patient had hypoesthesia in the territory of the maxillary (V2) branch of the right trigeminal nerve. She had no other symptoms on physical examination. Cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging were performed and showed a high signal density mass in the right PPF that exhibited heterogeneous contrast enhancement. She was initially treated with low-dose carbamazepine; however, the dose could not be further increased because of drowsiness and dizziness. Given the size and location of the mass, an endoscopic endonasal approach was performed, and the tumor was successfully resected (Video 1). The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient had significant improvement of her symptoms and was discharged with no new neurologic deficits. However, she continued to have hypoesthesia of the V2 segment of the trigeminal nerve.

Plants are occasionally exposed to environmental perturbations that limit their growth. One of these perturbations is the exposure to and interaction with various nanoparticles (NPs) that are discarded continuously into the environment. Hitherto, no study has been carried out evaluating the effects of iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3) NPs on soybean growth and lignin formation, as proposed herein. For comparative purposes, we also submitted soybean plants to non-nanoparticulate iron (FeCl3). Exposure of the plants to γ-Fe2O3 NPs increased cell wall-bound peroxidase (POD) activity but decreased phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity due, probably, to the negative feedback of accumulated phenolic compounds. In contrast, FeCl3 decreased cell wall-bound POD activity. Both γ-Fe2O3 NPs and FeCl3 increased the lignin content of roots and stems. However, significant lignin-induced growth inhibition was noted only in stems after exposure to NPs, possibly due to changes in lignin monomer composition. In this case, γ-Fe2O3 NPs decreased the guaiacyl monomer content of roots but increased that of stems. The high levels of monomer guaiacyl in stems resulting from the action of γ-Fe2O3 NPs decreased syringyl/guaiacyl ratios, generating more highly cross-linked lignin followed by the stiffening of the cell wall and growth inhibition. In contrast, FeCl3 increased the contents of monomers p-hydroxyphenyl and syringyl in roots. The observed increase in the syringyl/guaiacyl ratio in plant roots submitted to FeCl3 agrees with the lack of effect on growth, due to the formation of a less condensed lignin. In brief, we here describe that γ-Fe2O3 NPs and FeCl3 act differently in soybean plants.

Gallesia integrifolia is a Brazilian Amazon tree whose bark decoction is popularly used to treat peptic ulcer. The essential oil from the inner stem bark of G. integrifolia (EOGi) was chemically characterized by GC/MS. The in vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity were evaluated in CHO-K1 cells, while the in vivo oral acute toxicity was performed in mice. The gastroprotective effect of EOGi was assessed in acidified ethanol and piroxicam and ulcer healing on acetic acid -induced ulcer models in rodents. Anti-secretory, mucus, K+-ATP channels, prostaglandins (PGs), nitric oxide (NO), TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-10, catalase (CAT) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities and in vitro Helicobacter pylori action by EOGi were evaluated. EOGi exhibited cytotoxic effects only at 72h and no acute toxicity. EOGi showed gastroprotective and ulcer healing effects. EOGi gastroprotection was attenuated by indomethacin pre-treatment. Gastric volume and total acidity were reduced, while gastric pH was elevated. EOGi increased mucus and NO productions and CAT activity, and inhibited MPO activity, TNF-α and IL-1ß concentrations and augmented IL-10. EOGi was not active against H. pylori. These results indicated that EOGi is safe and exerts preventive and curative gastric ulcer effects by multitarget actions. Twenty compounds were identified and (-)-alpha-santalene was the main compound.
